Utah Camping

We are taking our T@G from Vermont to southern Utah national parks in September and will start making on-line reservations shortly. We would like suggested campsites for them. Zion - Watchman CG; Bryce - North CG (alternate private CGs if North is limited this year); Capitol Reef - Fruita CG (taking reservations this year); Canyonlands - Needles CG; Arches - Devils CG (if open this year) or alternates in the Moab area, preferably with water & flush toilets (electric not necessary); finally Black Canyon of the Gunnison - South Rim CG.

Hi Richard, I've been to all those locations. I'll comment on Moab. My last trip there I stayed at Dead Horse Point State Park, very nice, very scenic. The movie 'Thelma and Louise' was filmed there. This state park has electricity, and nice bathrooms with running water, no showers. I had to make reservations the day it opened for reservations, which was four months out, and the place was practically already booked up. While I was there, I had checked out the BLM campground called Horsethief Campground, its on the 313 enroute to Canyonlands. Its first come first serve, as most BLMs are. There was several open spots. I thought it wasn't bad, its rather large campground. I went there in April which is one of the busiest times.

There are many BLM camping sites all over, which are first come first serve. Here is a link to map showing all the places. https://www.blm.gov/sites/blm.gov/files/documents/files/BLMUtahMoabCamping.pdf

I also recommend the Colorado National Monument over in Grand Junction, if you have time, I think its worth seeing. Its not far from Moab.

When I was in Moab last time, I stayed here. It's a great campground with wonderful, knowledgeable folks, great facilities and is close to everything. A bit pricey but for my money, it's well worth it. Definitely recommend you call ahead!
There is lots of primitive (and beautiful) off-grid camping around Moab, but when it's time to get "civilized" and wash some clothes etc this is a great place. I am headed back to Moab in April and will stay here again!
