Strip and restain cabinetry?

Curious if anyone has ever tackled stripping and restaining or even painting the cabinets a lighter color. (Assuming you have the standard dark finish.)
I really do not like the dark finish and it's hard to find a Limited Edition version with the light colored cabinets.
Ever done it, know someone who did, or thought about doing it?
