Just bought a Tag

in Introductions

My wife and I pick up our Tag on Thursday and I’m nervous about my first tow. I have to cross over the Blue Ridge Mt to get home and it’s a bit steep and I’m sure we’ll be fine and get home ok.

We haven’t told our adult children what we’ve done yet. We are going to pose for pictures along the Skyline Drive and then announce our addition to the family. I watched dozens of videos the past two months and after going to actually see one, my wife and I were a bit surprised at how we were both “nesting”. A few days after looking at the 2023 Limited, I asked her about her thoughts and she had already bought stuff for the kitchen. We were hooked. We are in our 70’s and have dreamed about this our 50+ years together. Wish us well. Larry and Judy

    If you have a standard tag, your ball height should be 16" off the ground. If you bought a Boondock, it should be 21" Ball height is CRITICAL. You can be up to 1/2 " low, but never high..

    I have a 2022 Hyundai Tucson Hybrid with overdrive, so I should be fine. The dealer will outfit me with the correct ball and receiver, I’m already wired and have a hitch.

    I read the owners manual do I know what to expect from the dealer so I’m curious as to how it’s delivered to me. They have good to us so far so I shouldn’t suspect there will be any issues

    Thank you everyone. The dealer, Road Trip Campers in Orange Va. fixed me up with the proper hitch and ball. I was nervous to drive the 70 miles home but it went well. I’ll need to practice backing up.

    Congratulations. Regarding backing a T&G, make very small steering wheel movements. The short hitch-to-axle distance makes backing a little twitchy.

    Welcome to the family. Owning a T@G these last 6 years remains one of the best things we've done for ourselves. Backing up isn't easy at first and you'll be tempted to just avoid doing it. With practice, though, it's not so bad. I recommend making repeated trips to a sizeable empty parking lot and spend some time figuring out the nuances. You'll be glad you did.

    We bought our T@G about seven months ago. I'll offer two suggestions. Read the archive of messages here. It's a wonderful learning resource of good information on modifications, tips, tricks, equipment, maintenance, driving, setup, ... It took a couple of weeks, but I reviewed every post and profited greatly. Regarding backing, put your hand on the lower part of the steering wheel. The rear of the trailer will move in the direction you move your hand. And make SMALL steering movements.
