Changing my tow vehicle

I am presently using a 2017 Subaru Outback 3.6 that works really well but is getting old. I am looking at the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV as a replacement and am interested to know if anyone has had any experience with one. Thanks

We had a couple of Mitsubishi Outlanders at work. Both were gas only. I would say that in general they were okay vehicles but not in the same class as the Outback or a Toyota or Honda. I would stay away from CVT transmissions too if you are towing.

The vehicle you are looking at does not have a CVT. It uses a single-speed, reduction gearbox that connects an electric motor directly to the wheels. The gas engine acts as a generator, charging the battery and kicks in at highway speed via a clutch, powering the front wheels. (Very interesting setup).  I believe the towing capacity is 1,500 lbs and a tongue weight limit of 150 lbs. Bottom line you can tow the T@G, but you are near the max of the limits.
I normally tow with a 2012 Toyota RAV4 (4 Cly 4WD). Total towing miles with the Toyota is around 20,000. I also set up my 2023 Kia Sportage PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) to tow. Capacity (no brakes) is around 1,600 lbs and tongue weight 200 lbs. My KIA has a standard 6 speed transmission, and gas engine can assist and power the car at any speed. Electric only range is 34 miles. 261 hp. MPG ranges between 47 - 92 with an average of around 70 (non towing). Key to any PHEV is always charging it (daily anytime you use it).
Good luck in whatever vehicle you select.
