HIPCAMP

Has anyone tried HIPCAMP or similar? State and Federal Parks may continue to be booked for years to come and the concept seems pretty neat and an opportunity to meet interesting people.

As far as I can tell from my research, one does not need to be self-contained as far as a toilet availability is concerned to stay at many Hipcamp sites. Tents are allowed.

It is up to the host to indicate if they do not have a toilet option. Per their website, if land is less than 20 acres, a toilet is required. If they aren't able to offer a toilet option, the listing can be made RV-only (self-contained).
If the host has more than 20 acres and does not offer a toilet option, they need to make that very clear. When a toilet is not available, the host can/should indicate how they would like campers to dispose of their waste. This can include digging a hole or packing it out.
The concept of Hipcamp seems worth investing some time looking into.
I would also like to learn of others experience.
