Planning a 3 month trip this summer... Have a two door Jeep... What do you use for storage containers for food and clothing etc. and where do you carry it. Don't want to store everything inside the TAG then have to remove it every night.
On our long trips with our 2012 RAV4, we often use 11-gal plastic totes. (black bottom/yellow top). They just fit under our 2018 standard T@G. Use them mainly for clothing, food and miscellaneous electronics. My wife also had a suitcase and I a small backpack. I use packing cubes to keep things in some findable order. Remember you need something for dirty clothes too. You want something water and rodent proof. (Note my totes are not 100% waterproof-wish they were) Fitting under the T@G is a plus. (out of view and weather) You also want some easy lightweight slip-on footwear that can get wet, so if stored on wheel well or worn to a shower, it will not be an issue. Speaking about shower, a shower kit/bag that can hang up in the shower is useful. Under-pack. If need be, you can always buy trip related clothes/souvenirs. We stored dress up items (wedding) in storage under the mattresses. Also had canned items (beer) also under there, which fit nicely in some Amazon delivery boxes. We have a lithium battery and solar and never used our 900-watt propane generator. We do take a good 52 Quart Igloo BMX cooler. I have internal dividers in the cooler and we pack in it mainly with items that we want cold but usually not too much refrigerated food items. Our camping style does place us in areas where ice may not be refilled for 4-5 days. Don't forget some tools, but no need to over-do-it. As for carrying items while on road trips, I like to have a minimum in the T@G if possible. Camping chairs, tarps, some clothes and food/kitchen boxes generally travel in the back of our tow vehicle. I plan on worse case, rain, blowing dust or bugs when arriving at a destination, which may require us to run and just hop in the trailer for the night. When leaving most camp sites, I have no fear of leaving items in a plastic tote under the T@G. I do attach a locked thin steel cable to my solar suitcase, but have never had any issues while camping. I do like and use my little USB battery powered fan. It comes in handy in the T@G as well as while sitting outside. It has the battery capacity to run all night, but I normally use a small USB timer and power block and run it for 3-5 hours at night and it makes sleeping in warm weather a breeze. Speaking of power blocks, get some good high-capacity ones. I use them to charge up phones, cameras and speakers. Save the T@G battery for the must haves (refrigeration and lights). We found having an expandable and flexible 50' garden hose with spray nozzle useful. a lot easier to get out and store than the two 10' white hoses we also carry. Used it as a mister and campsite rinse-down when needed. Keep in mind you are camping. So be it if the shorts you have on today are the ones you wore yesterday and the day before... Have a great time on your 3-month trip!
