Hi all!
I’m new to the forum (go easy on me 😬). I’ve searched through a bunch of posts and read some general comments and discussion about awnings. I know I would like one, but unsure of which to get. Going from memory, it seems the clear choices are ARB 2500, Rhino Rack Batwing, Yakima Side Awning (SlimShady?), and some interesting DIY options. I’m not the DIY type, so I’m looking to buy. Are there other good contenders I’m missing? I’m not ready for a room yet, and need to be able to set it up solo. I also like the idea of the galley being covered, so suggestions for a rear awning are appreciated. It will all be going on a 2019 T@G XL.
Also, any favorite sites/sources that sell these awnings? I do a lot on amazon, but haven’t had much luck finding them there.
Thanks!
Tom

We own an ARB awning, not sure of the dimension, and I can install it by my self. My GF, she snever wanted to try, but I am sure she could. But we have an Outback/Boondock, so trailer is a little high for her when she would need to roll it up for storage.
What is nice with that type of awning, it is fairly quick to deploy and can be upgraded with a mosquito/noseeum net room, or a privacy room with windows and tye same type of bug net.
But, the Batwing type is, I beleive even faster and easier to deploy, but organizing a full privacy /bug room would be more complicated around the galley area. But I know the privacy room do exist for them.
Now, where to by is a different story, I am in canada, and got my ARB awning used more than 5 years ago.
Good luck with your choice and your search.
Welcome..Lots of great info on this site. We have a 2019 XL, we bought and have used a Coleman 10 FT. X 10 FT. SWINGWALL INSTANT CANOPY to cover the back galley. Bought it at Costco. One wall swings up horizontal and then closes to cover the end in. Enough room to move the picnic table under as well. Like you, side type awning is next. I like the Yakima Slim Shady. Batwing is VERY expense. I have attached a picture of the Coleman setup
Ours came with the Yakima Slim Shady. It does the trick, but its not really made to take being left set up moderate to heavy rain, pretty sure all these roof rack mounted awnings are very similar when it comes to moderate to heavy rain ARB, Rhino etc. I love the Batwing but $$$!

We have the Coleman Mountain View for times when it might rain or be cold. Costco sells it online. It works great and one person can put it up. If you have to add roof rails to your T@G then you’ll be spending a lot for an ARB or that style. REI sells the Yakima and puts it on sale occasionally

I have a 2019 Boondock Edge which comes with the Yakima Slim Shady, to be honest I rarely use it. It can be a pain to put away by yourself. The easiest and most versatile canopy that I use the most is just a simple 10x10 E Zee Up.
I also have a rear canopy for the galley, just depends on how much stuff I feel like putting up.
we have dual Slim Shady's, but rain is not an issue with our camping since we live in SoCal and don't camp in the rain. My wife is 6' so setup is no problem
This looks great! I like the look, the coverage, and the color! Your signature says you have a MAX--does that mean you're on a 5-wide? Think the opening on this tent will accommodate an XL (6-wide)?
What is the rear canopy you're using? Do you like it and recommend it? I've been looking for clamshells like that, but none are jumping out (some on amazon don't get great reviews).
I'm jealous of the "no rain!" I did two nights in a tent in the pouring rain recently, hence the new camper
The galley cover is a Hasika or King Camp available on Amazon. Very versatile.

Hasika is it, very easy to put up and works great over the galley hatch, they cost about $90.
Yes, it will fit over the 6 wide but not the Boondock because it’s higher. We also bring a Hasika for one night stays. The Coleman is very versitle with two zip on solid panels and 4 screen sides.

Rain is not really an issue with the Yakima/ARB +++ style of awning. You just have to lower one corner and water will flow down and not puddle. Take only a few sexonds to prevent any dammage fro water accumulation.
Super cool! I like it!
I modified a couple of pop ups for each door. Works as a vestibule, shower, changing area, and for camp toilet.
I use the Yescom awning bought on Amazon for my wife’s side of the Boondock XL. Nice to have something covering the entrance when it’s raining and a nice gathering spot for meals. I also use 2 two or three gallon jugs half filled with sand to hold the legs, this keeps a wind from blowing the thing down..
Off the back I’ve got a Hasika as well. If you go that direction, get better cam action suction cups.

Do you have any more pictures of your mod for the shower tents? Did you cut them on the side?
We actually carry a 10x10 ez up, a 6 x 6 ( it's shorter) ez up and the ozark trail 2 room shower tent...depending on what, where and how long we're out..we feel we're covered...our xl didn't have any roof rails...love the flexibility it gives us and it all stows pretty small in the tv

Yep! We use 2 10 x 10 EZ ups and the Ozark Trail 2 room shower tent. It's perfect for our needs, it was inexpensive, and I can actually set it up and tear it down without help if I need to.

We have the Coleman Mountain View..... Wondering the best way to anchor down. Not out of the bag yet. Hate to pound stakes in the ground where there might be sprinkler systems. The bowed frame/legs do not appear to like the typical weights.

@GigHarborTom--Coleman I think makes a multi surface anchor "sandbag" system, they might work? https://www.amazon.com/Coleman-Multi-surface-Shelter-Anchors-Included/dp/B00WM7DOYI
We use the stakes if on dirt or gravel. Have not seen sprinkler system under a RV pad. If on pavement I use the side cords and a stake off the pavement. I bought a box of 10 heavier duty stakes. You can use weights on the legs like a pop up but I didn’t like the idea of extra space and weight for storage.

Kind of what I'm finding out. For years I have been using what my dad called railroad spikes (humongous nail) with fender washers. I do have a dozen or so forged tent pegs I use for my primitive mountain man stuff. With the last big trailer I used the old style kerosene or gas cans, with a piece of plastic pipe inserted in concrete. Danged if I'll use that again. Looked cool with a vintage trailer though.

Or use large lag screws and drive them in with your cordless drill
Over in Wallawalla WA for brides go to wine testing/tasting. Stakes out into grass at RV park. The grounds guy came by reminding me they had a sprinkler system. I apologized and told him get a hold of me if I caused any damage. We've been back a couple times and I behaved myself.

We've run into a couple of places that staking wasn't allowed...previously picked up some weights but like others have mentioned they're heavy and take up space...we ended up investing in some water filled canopy weights...similar to the sand/ rock weights that strap to the canopy legs..but you fill them with water and when not filled they collapse and store easily...we bought them for T@bazona after hearing how windy it was last year...they worked perfectly and no flying ez up!

Think I saw the water filled bags. That might be my go to thing. Thanks

Got back Friday from three days down along the Columbia River, Skamokawa Vista Park.
Second time out with the new Coleman Mt View Screen dome. While taking down, discovered a major splinting of a strut section. Until then, loved it ,even in a heavy rain storm. Others have commented on this issue and the struggle
to set up.
Considering the Clam Quick Set Up Shelter. Lots of complaints on line about poor ventilation and uncomfortably hot. Sure like something more reliable and easier to set up than the Coleman.

I have a Clam 6x6. Yes the ventilation can be an issue, but I do not consider it a major one.
I have the smaller Clam because when stored, it fits in the back of my Rav4. Next size up would not fit in any reasonable manner. Last time I used it the temps were in high 80s and setup mostly in shade. Ventilation was not an issue at all. As needed, I put the wind walls up, open the windows and use it also for a portable toilet.
I am not sure if any sceen shelter would be much different as it pertains to ventilation.
